The Exam Pattern

Commonly, the campus placement season begins at the pre-final/final semester. It means that the placement process may start from second last year or in the last year itself. Regardless, the actual date depends on the college, the companies arriving and the performance of the students. Last year, the recruitment exams commenced in the month of July and went on until the end of the academic year. Students should know that the placement session for any company generally has 3 –4 rounds.

Nowadays, almost all campus recruitment exams held in India are based on a percentile system. Students obtain marks in each section separately which is then summed up to arrive at the total score. Subsequently, these scores will determine the rank for each of the candidates. For instance, the candidate with the highest marks out of 400 among all CMAT test-takers will secure All India Rank 1. Once the rank is known, the percentile calculation formula is used to determine the aggregate percentile of the candidate.

Exam Eligibility

Whether it is on-campus or off-campus placement drives, the criteria for recruitment varies from company to company. Well established companies recruit for various profiles from one college. According to the job vacancy, the criteria for each profile is also different. However, a few things that are common with all recruitment exams held over India are as follows:

● For well-paid posts, the general eligibility criteria for most companies is 60% aggregate. It implies that you should score at least 60% in your average percentage score in all semesters. However, some companies prefer a 70% aggregate. If you are highly ambitious, you should score at least 60% right from the first semester and above 70% for better opportunities.

● Besides considering your percentage, companies take into account your long-term potential, enthusiasm and passion, problem-solving skills, patience, ambition, team player capabilities, and positive attitude. While attending the placement programs, make sure to stay active and present in all rounds. Any active backlogs at the time of the placement season aren't acceptable.

Exam Fee

Corporate companies come to the campus to find talented prospects to fill their posts. Organizing a placement drive in colleges is a challenging task and after so many hustles, the company won't go empty-handed. However, to attend the placement protocol and appear for the exam, you need to fill an application form along with fees. Generally, OBC and EWS students have to pay an application fee of Rs 350 but you should note that the fees differ in different colleges.

However, SC/ST, women, PwD candidates, and ex-servicemen are exempted to pay any application fee in all universities. Before the last date, you can pay your fees via credit card/debit /net banking. If you are not shortlisted in the examination, your fees will not be refunded. The same principle is followed in the cancellation of your form. Once your application has submitted, there is no way to cancel it. Still, if you apply for the GATE exam and you want to cancel it, it is advisable to attend the exam as there is no limit for attempts.

For on-campus placements, your college will execute most of the recruitment formalities. However, if you couldn't discover a job opportunity in your campus, you can apply you with off-campus placements as follows:

Step 1: Check company websites for updates related to post vacancies. Once you find a vacancy that suits your resume, fill it up.

Step 2: Also, browse through the online job hosting portals. You can also choose to apply through popular and reliable online portals.

Step 3: Take a recruitment test like the AMCAT test and get a good score.

Step 4: Ask your college Principal to give a letter of recommendation in case you couldn't apply for on-campus placements for valid reasons.

Step 5: Stay connected within your network as some companies prefer recruits referred by current employees. Try to build your network and remain in touch with friends, seniors, and relatives.
